Chapter Six
Syn dressed himself as he walked the long hallway, Archer’s words playing over and over in his head. He could see the look of disappointment on the human’s face as he rejected the idea, and it stung. He walked into his bedroom and washed his hands in the bowl of water in the corner. He glanced around the room, feeling closed in. He needed out of the base, and away from Archer. Collecting a few things, he left the room and stalked down the hallway once more.
He made his way into the tech room and saw both Peytr and Symon at the computers.
“How goes it?”
Both vampires looked up at him, a knowing look on their faces.
“Sounded like it just went a helluva lot better for you,” Peytr said, looking back to his screen.
“Your human sure is loud,” Symon said, keying in a few things.
“Shut it. The both of you.” Vampire hearing was too good, even if they were only changelings. Archer wasn’t that loud. They were eavesdroppers.
“Are you taking him to the Citadel?” Symon asked.
He should. “No. He’s going to remain a couple of days.”
Both techs turned to look at him.
“He’s weak. He needs more food and rest before we go,” Syn answered.
“Yeah, he’s weak,” Symon said with a chuckle. “He sounded real weak.”
“You thinking of keeping him around?” Peytr asked.
“You know we can’t do that,” Syn said.
“Why not?” Symon asked.
“He belongs at the Citadel.”
Peytr and Symon glanced at one another.
The look made Syn’s skin crawl. “What?”
“You like him,” Peytr answered. “And it’s freaking you out.”
Syn scowled. “Oh really? And you’re an expert on vampire-human relations?”
“No. But when have you ever coveted a human and neglected to immediately take him to the Citadel before?” Symon asked. “He said he wanted to stay. Why can’t he?”
“Stop listening in on intimate conversations or I’ll have both your heads!” he roared.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” they both said in unison, looking down.
Being reminded of who he was didn’t suit, either. “Give me a direction. I’m headed out.”
“You’re going to leave the human here alone?” Symon asked, his eyes wide.
“Touch him, and die,” Syn said through clenched teeth.
Symon frowned. “You know me better than that.”
Syn did. He trusted both of the vampires with his life. And Archer’s. “Just give me a fucking direction to track.”
Symon looked down at his screen and typed a few keys. “I just sent coordinates to your GPS.”
Syn pulled on his leather gloves, focusing on his fingers. Fingers that had just tempted and tormented the human. And brought the man to two amazing releases. He could still scent Archer on his flesh, and it threatened to drive him insane. “Peytr, can you get something for the human to eat?”
“Of course, boss.”
Boss sounded much better than the other bullshit. “I’ll be back in a few days.” He spun and headed through the base, even when his feet wanted to pound their way through the hallways and back to Archer’s room. I can’t keep him here. It’s not our mission.
When he was settled in the front seat of the tank, he pulled on his mask and adjusted it so he could see properly.
